DIRECTOR – RUBEN CENTRE
Ruben Centre is a not-for-profit, faith-based organization under the governance of the Africa Province
of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The Congregation is registered in Kenya as “Congregation
of Christian Brothers Registered Trustees” under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act.
The Christian Brothers’ District Leadership Team in East Africa, which acts on behalf of the Province
as the governing body of Ruben Centre, wishes to appoint a new Director to succeed the current
Director, who will be stepping down at the end of this year. The new Director will be tasked with the
implementation of the Strategic Plan 2021-25.
The Director has overall responsibility for the management of Ruben Centre. The Director works
closely with the Ruben Centre Board, of which he/she is an ex officio member, and which oversees the
operations of Ruben Centre on behalf of the governing body.
The Director is responsible for nurturing Ruben Centre as a faith-based organization whose vision
and values are inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Christian Brothers’ Congregational Charism,
and the Pillars and Features of the Edmund Rice Ministries East Africa (ERMEA).
The Director is a key figure in the Centre’s leadership structure, and as such leads, motivates and
empowers the Centre leadership team. Leading by example is critical to the Director’s effectiveness at

Centre plays for the people of Mukuru. It needs someone who can take a visionary and values-driven
approach, while immersing himself in the busy life of Ruben Centre, within the challenging realities of
daily life in Mukuru kwa Ruben.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engages with all stakeholders to promote the mission of Ruben and to create with staff a flourishing Centre culture.
- Works with senior leaders at Ruben to motivate and direct staff in accordance with the vision and mission of the Centre. He convenes and coordinates regular meetings of senior staff to ensure that Heads of Department and other key administrators collaborate effectively in the service of Ruben’s mission.
- Is responsible for the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2021-2025 and its programmes, and for periodic review and renewal of strategic planning.
- Reports regularly to the Centre Board, and engages it in evaluation of performance, planning and support of Centre operations. The Director functions as the Organizing Secretary of the Centre Board.
- Keeps the governing body informed of significant developments, and consults it in relation to governance issues of law, property and other matters affecting the good standing of Ruben Centre as a Christian Brothers ministry
- Oversees the formulation and execution of annual work plans that are in line with the Strategic Plan.
- Has oversight of staff recruitment, appraisal and on-going professional development and training, in accordance with appropriate Human Resource policies and manual.
- Oversees effective resource mobilization to support the Centre’s operation, and the proper use of these resources.
- Oversees the development and implementation of the necessary policies and procedures by the Centre leadership team, to provide professional and transparent administration of the Centre.
- Oversees financial administration, including budgeting, financial reporting, annual audits and the follow-up, procedures for banking and handling of cash, in line with the directives of the Christian Brothers’ Mission Finance Manual.
- Fosters innovation and creativity, and the development of appropriate new initiatives.
- Collaborates with the Christian Brothers’ Mission Development Office.
- Maintains and fosters positive working relations with donors, relevant public authorities and civil society groups.
- Fosters a safe and conducive environment at Ruben Centre through appropriate policies and procedures to ensure Centre security and safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
- Ensures that effective policies and mechanisms are in place for responding to complaints from clients and stakeholders.
- Ensures that the assets of the Centre are being properly managed and maintained.
- Any other duties assigned by the District Leader.
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in development, management or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Significant experience in a relevant field of activity (e.g. social or community development), including a minimum of five years’ experience in senior leadership roles.
- A foundation of Christian values.
- Passion for people made poor, and for leading Ruben in living out its vision and values in serving them.
- A readiness to appreciate, consolidate and build on what has been achieved in Ruben’s programs and organisational culture.
- A visionary eye to see and promote transformative responses from Ruben to the needs of Mukuru.
- A demonstrated ability to apply technical and professional knowledge to the practical demands of day-to-day operations.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Emotional intelligence and ability to listen which will inspire trust, teamwork, professionalism, cooperation and passion for Ruben Centre’s mission and vision.
- Excellent communication skills.
